The Ceremony at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral The Sacrament of Marriage in the Eastern Orthodox Church derives from the belief that marriage exists from God’s creation of the first man and the first woman. As such, the couple does not exchange vows, but is brought together in a sacred union by the grace of God. The marriage ceremony is steeped in ritual and symbolism. Each of the acts which you will observe have special meaning and significance. The BetrothalThe rings are blessed and exchanged three times symbolizing the Holy Trinity and the couple's commitment. The CrowningCrowns of marriage (Stephana) are placed upon the bride and groom's heads joined by a ribbon to symbolize unity. The Crowning is followed by the sharing of the Common Cup representing shared life. Lastly, the Priest leads the bride and groom in a ceremonial walk around the altar three times. This signifies the couple's first steps as husband and wife.

Koumbaro (Greek Orthodox Sponsor)A key player in the Greek wedding ceremony is the koumbaro. This person will stand at the altar with the bride and groom and perform actions at important parts of the ceremony. Acting as koumbaro is a high honor.

You can’t go wrong wandering the National Mall to see the monuments and memorials (one of Steve's favorite pastimes!)...they’re especially great at night.Most of the Smithsonian museums are free, so you can pop in and out of spots like Air &amp; Space, Natural History, or Steph's personal favorite, the American History Museum. D.C. also has an awesome food scene.Check out Georgetown for classic charm, great shopping, and a quick bite at the buzz worthy Mediterranean spot, "Yellow." D.C. staples like Le Diplomate or any Jose Andres restaurant, are the go-to! Grab a drink at the bride and groom's favorite cocktail spot, "The Alchemist." Not only does its menu have unique drinks, but for you Swifties joining the party, it's a must for the name alone (cue: "The Alchemy"). There are plenty of coffee shops and bakeries if you’re just looking for a chill morning. Maman is a french-inspired cafe, must!You can also stroll down memory lane to Steph and Steve's first date and proposal spot, "Cafe du Parc" connected to the Willard InterContinental Hotel. If weather serves, walk along the Wharf, the Georgetown waterfront, or explore nearby Old Town Alexandria for cute streets and shops.
